Secretary of Police Jenni Irish-Qhobosheane today told Members of Parliament she believes they have succeeded in their attempts to bring the Hawks crime-fighting unit in line with the Constitution.
Irish-Qhobosheane was addressing Parliamentarians on the South African Police Service Amendment Bill inCape Town .
Earlier reports said that a
Constitutional Court
judgment found the unit was not properly insulated against interference.
The Police Secretary said the bill makes provision for the head of the Hawks to be appointed on a seven-year non-renewable contract.
Irish-Qhobosheane also said that Parliament would also be given greater powers in terms of approving Hawks policy.
