The Western Cape health department confirmed today that the province once again remains the country’s drinking capital.

Statistics revealed that more than half of the Cape population consumes alcohol.

Today the department met with NGO’s to discuss the issue.

In the province at least 60 percent of the population consumes alcohol and one third abuses it.

The department confirmed that this resulted in 300 deaths per month.

The department’s Dr Tracey Naledi said the province lead’s the rest of the country in terms of the amount of alcohol the people drink.

On a global scale South Africa is ranked third on the list of countries who consume the most alcohol.

Naledi said the health department was looking into serious interventions to turn this around.
