The National Home Builders Registration Council said it is conducting an investigation into the housing collapse at Meyersdal.

About nine people died on Monday when a house under construction collapsed.

It is believed that the house collapsed due to sub-standard workmanship.

The NHBRC has urged people to verify the credentials of builders before construction begins.

NHBRC Spokesperson Wanda Lubelwana said no plans were submitted to the city of Ekurhuleni, deeming the whole construction illegal.

“Any builder constructing any structure should first submit plans for approval, as required by the law Lubelwana added.
