The Democratic Alliance said government has failed workers who have been retrenched.

This follows a reply to a DA parliamentary question to the Minister of Labour Mildred Oliphant about the budget of the Training and Layoff Scheme.

DA MP of Labour Ian Ollis said our priority as a nation must be to create jobs and grow the economy so that we can lift people out of poverty.

Ollis said the training lay out has been made available, towards capacitating employees that are facing unemployment, that means only 1.7% of the money that has been used to help workers, who are facing retrenchment to get training and re-employed in a new capacity.

“That is shocking, I am going to submit a series of parliamentary questions to obtain an explanation on why such a small amount of money was only used of this large fund.” Ollis added.
