Three people, believed to be family members, who were travelling in a car on the N3 northbound under the Hammarsdale Bridge, in KwaZulu-Natal, were killed early this morning.

It is believed the family was travelling southbound towards Pietermaritzburg.

A truck travelling in the opposite direction apparently lost control and overturned.

The load on the truck was ejected and it impacted with the car.

The exact details surrounding the cause of the incident will remain the subject of a police investigation.

ER24 spokeswoman Chitra Bodasing said when ER24 paramedics and other services arrived on scene they found the truck on its roof.

Bodasing said it was engulfed in flames. Fire and Rescue Services extinguished the fire.

“On assessment of the car it was found that three passengers, all women, were trapped. Unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do for them. They were declared dead. Fire and Rescue Services extricated them from the vehicle.” Bodasing said.
Bodasing added that a fourth passenger was found to be in a critical condition and the driver was found to have sustained moderate injuries.

They were treated and transported to hospital for further medical care.

Meanwhile twelve people were injured in a collision between a taxi and bakkie at the Hendrik Potgieter and Christiaan de Wet intersection, in Roodepoort, this morning.

ER24 spokeswoman Chitra Bodasing said when ER24 paramedics and other services arrived on scene they found patients, all from the taxi, sitting on the side of the road.

Bodasing added that the patients were assessed and found to have sustained minor to moderate injuries.

“They were treated and transported to hospital for further medical care.” Bodasing concluded.
