The Minister of Transport Sibusiso Ndebele says there will be a crackdown on unroadworthy vehicles, in particular taxis and buses, over the Easter weekend.

A thousand vehicles were removed from the roads last month. In the latest move, 20 buses and 40 minibus-taxis were taken of roads in Gauteng.

Ndebele has appealed to public transport operators to ensure that their drivers have adequate rest breaks on long journeys.

Meanwhile five people died in a horror accident between Villiers and Warden in the Free State when a minibus taxi and a car collided.

Police say the taxi was travelling from Johannesburg to QwaQwa when a tyre burst, causing the vehicle to swerve into oncoming traffic.
