The Competition Commission has referred its investigation into white maize meal cartels operating in the country to the Competition Tribunal for prosecution.
Deputy Head of the Commission, Tembinkosi Bomakele says they have been investigating price fixing in the maize meal industry for three years now.
He says the Commission is calling on the tribunal to impose a penalty of 10-percent of annual turnover on at least 17 different maize meal companies who they feel were involved in the cartel.
Bomakele says price fixing of this kind is unacceptable as it targets the poorest people in the country.
