Gender commission to be placed under curatorship

A call has been made to place the Commission for Gender Equality under curatorship in light of reports of under performance and poor management.

The motion was passed by chairman of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts Themba Godi in parliament yesterday.

Godi said in view of its current status, the CGE be placed under curatorship within the next two weeks.

The committee was forced yesterday to discontinue a hearing with the Commission.

“We felt that with the absence of the bodies that have direct oversight functions over CGE, we would not achieve the objective of the meeting,” Godi said.

Godi says they have requested the Presidency, the Minister for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities as well as the Speaker to urgently intervene and save the commission from collapsing.

The three are all responsible for oversight over the CGE.

The commission is a Chapter 9 institution tasked with supporting South Africa’s democracy.

Godi also said the committee was concerned that oversight and management of Chapter 9institutions was not treated as a matter of priority.

“The CGE should not be allowed to disintegrate, thus reverse the hard-won gains in the advancement of the struggle for gender equality,” he added.

What a disaster. Will the Commissioners be held accountable or will their actions be swept under the carpet ?
