A joint operation between various police units comprising Provincial Detectives, Sea Border, Task Force and National Intervention Unit resulted in the arrest of 19 suspects (aged between 18 and 38) in possession of a large quantity of abalone, earlier this morning.

The police’s Captain FC Van Wyk says the abalone was counted by officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and amounted to 1 308 units, however the value is yet to be determined.

He further says that the suspects are due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Friday on abalone related charges under the Marine Resource Act.
