City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith on Monday said the city’s metal theft unit is doing great work in terms of dealing with the scourge of copper theft.

Smith said the problem the city is facing is people who re-offend.

He added that the unit has arrested 107 suspects and 46 of them have been prosecuted.

Smith said the officers are very concerned with the level of under reporting and the even though most of the criminals have been arrested they just appear in court and the next thing they are out.

Smith added that the City will look to have a meeting with the National Minister of Police Nkosinathi Ntleko,to find new ways to deal with this matter.
