The Congress of South African Trade Union said it will fight the proposal to privatize Eskom.

Cosatu Spokesperson Patrick Craven said this has been a continuation of an agenda by government starting in the late 1990’s.

Meanwhile the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa said privatizing Eskom would be a big mistake.

Craven said the price of electricity must reflect its cost, as the government chooses more expensive technology, like renewables, increased pricing is inevitable.

Craven said South Africa’s sovereign debt rating depended on high economic growth, rising standards of living and job creation.

“To achieve these goals, there had to be enough electricity at a realistic price, but this depended on using the most efficient technology to reduce costs Craven added.
