The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union said it is concerned by the increase of murders in the country.

Popcru was responding to the latest crime statistics which were released on Friday by Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko.

Popcru Spokesperson Theto Mahlakoana said in the recent past the union has witnessed confiscation of illegal drugs worth billion of rands, which is the result of the amount of work SAPS members are investing to ensure we rid the country of illegal substances.

Mahlakoana said The 26.1% increase in drug-related crime is a bitter-sweet conundrum, as the increase could be translated to mean that the police have been arresting drug peddlers and abusers in large numbers.

"Which, if it's the case, is cause for celebration. However, because of the close link between drug use and other crimes, including theft and robberies, we remain concerned Mahlakoana added.
