Western Cape MEC of Education Debbie Schafer on Tuesday laid criminal charges in terms of the South African Schools Act.

This is due to the protest action in Grabouw which has resulted in school children not attending school.

Protestors in the area took to the street on Monday and Tuesday protesting over service delivery issues in the area.

MEC Schafer said police need to act swiftly to restore order in the community so that teaching can resume.

Ministerial Spokesperson Jessica Shelver said over 6,000 learners have been affected by these violent protests.

Shelver said Minister Schafer has laid charges against the African National Congress, the Ses'Khona People's Rights Movement and the GCA.

Shelver said Minister Schafer has evidence that these groups are behind the violent protest.

“The charges relate to the South African Schools Act Shelver added.
