The Western Cape Department of Health on
Monday said over the weekend its Emergency Centres across the province were
once again under pressure with a total of 4 745 patients, and only 24% of the patients were deemed emergency cases.
Provincial Deputy Director of
Communications Mark van der Heever said when less than urgent cases flood the
emergency centres, cause a reduction in efficiency of both the emergency
service and routine medical care.
Van de Heever added that those people with
minor issues should be presenting to the nearest day hospital which is opened
24 hours just to relive some of the pressure that we are experiencing at our
emergency centres.
“If we take away the people not in need of
emergency care, then that will free up additional time and our doctors and
staff can basically perform adequate job functions without looking after
people, who are not seriously ill.” Van de Heever added.
