The Democratic Alliance has called for Independent Police Investigative Directorate Robert McBride to give an update to Parliament about the investigation into National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega.
DA MP of Police Dianne Kohler Barnard said
several reports have suggested that the NPA has decided not to pursue the
charges against Phiyega.
This follows allegations that the police
commissioner tipped off Western Cape Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer about an investigation
against him.
Barnard said Phiyega has failed to rectify
the crisis in the SAPS and no action has been taken against SAPS members who
have been found to have a criminal record.
“With such a blemish track record it must
be investigated and Parliament must exercise its oversight, as such if McBride
does not see to my written request I will appeal to the Chairperson of the
Portfolio Committee to summon him and to compel him to make public the contents
of his investigation into the national police commissioner” Barnard added.
