The National Sea Rescue Institute in Durban had to evacuate a 24-year-old Filipino sailor off a ship heading towards Durban from Brazil.

This is after he sustained a right leg compound fracture and a head injury after falling about 6 meters into a cargo hold aboard a vessel.

NSRI Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said when we arrived on scene the patient was loaded on a helicopter and airlifted to a hospital in Durban.

Lambinon said the medical team continued treatment in the helicopter where he was in a serious but stable condition.

“His treatment is being continued at a Durban hospital by medical staff” Lambinon added.
