Eight people died and multiple injured in separate collisions in Limpopo and Cape Town

ER24 paramedics responded to an accident scene last night after a bakkie hit eight people leaving them dead and injuring twelve people on the Old Constantia Road in Tzaneen, Limpopo.

ER24 Spokesperson Russel Meiring said when ER24 and Limpopo EMS paramedics arrived on scene, they found a wrecked bakkie parked some distance away from the scene.

Meiring added that on assessment of the scene, they found that eight people had sustained fatal injuries. Twelve others were found scattered across the road with injuries ranging from moderate to critical.

“Paramedics immediately began their treatment providing the patients with advanced life support.

Once all the patients were treated, paramedics rushed them to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.” Meiring said.

He also said that It is alleged that the group of people had been carving up a body of a Hippopotamus when they were hit by the bakkie.

According to local paramedics, incidents involving large vehicles colliding with animals on this road are not uncommon.

In a separate accident eight people were injured this morning, two of which were critical, when two vehicles collided at the Prince George Drive and Concert Boulevard intersection, Cape Town.

ER24 Spokesperson Russel Meiring said when they arrived on scene, they found both the light motor vehicles stationed on their sides in the middle of the intersection.

“On assessment, paramedics found that both drivers were still trapped in their vehicles and were in a critical condition.

Provincial fire services had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to free the two trapped men in a 30 minute rescue.” Meiring added.

He said once freed, paramedics provided the patients with advanced life support before transporting them to Groote Schuur Hospital for further treatment.

“The remaining patients were treated for their injuries and transported to nearby hospitals for further observations.” Meiring added.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
