Western Cape Premier Helen Zille together with Education MEC Debbie Schafer are both optimistic that matric results this year will again improve in the province.
On Monday they announced the
province’s target for the upcoming National Senior Certificate Examination.
In the last five years the province has
managed to reduce the number of underperforming high schools from 85 in 2009 to
23 in 2013.
Ministerial Spokesperson
Jessica Shelver said the Western Cape
will be aiming for an increase in the number of learners passing matric from
40 558 in 2013.
Shelver added that this
years target is 43 000 to achieve approximately 20 000 bachelor
degrees passes which is 40% of the candidates that are writing and a reduction
of underperforming schools by 50%
Meanwhile the provincial
government says the real matric pass rate is determined by comparing the number
of learners enrolled for the NSC exams to the number of Grade 10 learners
enrolled two years before that.
Government has committed that the quality also
extends to the marking of matric exam papers.
Ministerial Spokesperson Jessica Shelver said we are aiming to achieve all of this whilst maintaining competency testing for matric markers and not inflating our school based assessment or not culling our weaker learners
“We urge all parents and
communities to continue supporting our canditades over this time and we have
every confidence that their hard work will be rewarded.” Shelver added.
