Premier Helen Zille together with Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schafer and Cultural Affairs and Sport MEC Nomafrench Mbombo yesterday launched a new flagship initiative called the Year Beyond programme.

Ministeral Spokesperson for WCED Jessica Shelver said the Western Cape Government is collaborating with a number of NGOs to implement this after-school academic improvement programme in schools with Mass Opportunity and Development centres.

The programme will be rolled out at 24 schools at the start of the 2015 school year and will provide English literacy and numeracy support in primary schools and English, maths and homework support in high schools.

“It will create a range of educational and economic opportunities for both our learners’ volunteers.” Shelver added

She also said most importantly, it will create safe spaces for our young people after school hours where they can learn and participate in fun education club and can be exposed to role models.

“This is critical if we hope to improve our education outcome and tackle the many social challenges that are facing our youth including gangs and substance abuse.” Shelver said.
