DA: cheating scandal teachers must face the law

The Democratic Alliance says disciplinary action should be taken against the teachers who were found to have assisted students to cheat in their matric exams.

This follows the Department of Basic Education stating that is teachers come forward and confess they will be given full indemnity.

DA MP of Basic Education Annette Lovermore in a statement said the department could and should institute disciplinary procedures against such teachers and report them to the South African Council for Educators.

Lovemore said “we submit as the Democratic Alliance that she is wrong; ethically these teachers have compromised the future of their learners and must be held accountable”.

Legally, the law, the employment of educators act defines their action as clearly misconduct.

It states disciplinary actions must be taken. It certainly does not allow the minister any discretion.

I will be writing to the minister pointing out these facts and requesting that she reconsider her actions Lovemore added.
