The Western Cape Department of Education has completed an investigation into indications of cheating during the 2014 matric exams at a private college in Athlone.

The WCED’s Paddy Attwell said the investigation found that candidates participated and were helped in copying in nine papers covering seven subjects.

Attwell says the subjects included Physical sciences, Life sciences and Maths amongst others. The investigators audited every paper written at the Athlone campus, they also interviewed teachers and candidates.

He added that the investigation involved about 46 candidates who have not yet received their matriculation results. The irregularities committee will consider findings of the investigation before recommending further steps.

Meanwhile the National Department of Education is also investigating a cheating scandal in three provinces.
