Over the past weekend 107 suspects were arrested by the City of Cape Town’s Metro Police and Traffic Services of which 87 were arrested for drunk driving.

26 taxis were impounded for having no operating licences during a sedan taxi operation in the CBD.

Also during the weekend 12 other people were arrested for various offences including being in possession of drugs and stolen vehicles.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said we are very distressed that no matter how much enforcements we continue to do, we do not see the behaviour changing.

Smith added that he is glad he is in the position now to finalise the arrangements for significant addition to our traffic enforcement resources, which we will announce in the next few days which will see us bolster the traffic capacity on our roads, increase the number of traffic officers with this next twelve month period, some of them starting almost immediately so that we can ensure that our roads are safer.

“We can reduce the carnage on our roads, much of which continues to be driven by the ill judgement of people who drive under the influence of alcohol.” Smith concluded.
