The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has condemned the recent vandalism of the War memorial Statue in Uitenhage.

The statue was defaced with white paint for the second time in a matter of weeks.

The municipality said anyone caught and found to be breaking the law will be dealt with in terms of the criminal justice system.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Spokesperson Roland Williams said they fully understand the frustrations that people may have with artefacts and symbols of Apartheid.

Williams said in no way do we dilute the frustrations of people in that regard, however we invite anyone who has a view on what South Africa should do with these statues, to come forward and speak to us and we will constructively engage with you.

“The defacing and vandalism of statues or any other memorial sites will not be tolerated, will not be condoned under any circumstances.” Williams added.
