A call for Nersa to reject Eskom’s application for a tariff hike

Lusanda Bill
26 June 2015

The Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union said the latest application by Eskom for a tariff increase is unaffordable.

The power utility is requesting a 9.58 percent tariff hike for the running of short term power producing projects and the open cycle diesel turbines.

The union is calling on the National Energy Regulator of South Africa to dismiss the request by Eskom.

IMATU Research and Policy Analyst Anja Muller-Deibicht said we are hoping that Nersa will reject the application outright.

Deibicht said Eskom has already been granted a 12.69% tariff increase and a further increase on top of this would not only be unaffordable but virtually impossible for most South Africans to pay.

“Obviously we are also looking at the issue around transparency with the money that has been collected already and we are looking for a sustainable solution going forward” Deibicht added.
