The
Democratic Alliance said it is concerned by the money that South Africa has
contributed to the African Union Summit.
This
is after a report states that the AU meeting is expected to adopt a new funding
model which will see South Africa's contribution to the organisation grow to
R700 million.
DA
MP of International Relations and Cooperation Sandy Kaylan said It is
outrageous that our contribution to the AU has quadrupled in the last year to
R700 million with the likelihood of this increasing over the next few years.
Kaylan
added that the most troubling thing about this is that the South African voter
will have to pay extra on hospitality levy’s which surely is going to impact on
the poor people in this country.
“The
department of National Treasury has not budgeted for this amount so one wants
to know who authorised such a gift to the AU and why is it that all the AU
countries can’t make equal and proper contribution rather than South Africa
being a cash cow.” Kaylan said.
