The Democratic Alliance condemns the decision by the South African Government to allow President Oamr al-Bashir of Sudan to leave the country, despite a High Court order prohibiting his departure.

DA shadow Minister of Justice Glynnis Breytenbach said, the DA is currently in consultations with its lawyers to ensure that the government not be allowed to sidestep accountability.

Breytenbach said, this sets a disturbing precedent that the executive is allowed to simply ignore the rulings of the High Court of South Africa.

“The DA is shocked and appalled by the state to let Mr al-Bashir to leave the country while an order issued by the High Court of South Africa stated that he remains in the country until the matter had been finalised. It is quite clear that the government doesn’t take the rule of law, the law of South Africa and that it is a law unto itself”, Breytenbach added.
