The City of Cape Town works closely with the Western Cape Government Health Department as well as a number of NGOs to raise awareness about the benefits of medical male circumcision.

In recent years, the City has also worked hard to create an environment conducive to the particular health needs of men.

Mayoral Committee Member for Health, Siyabulela Mamkeli said the majority of traditional initiation sites in Cape Town are situated in Khayelitsha, Nyanga and Gugulethu.

City Health’s interventions are aimed at reducing the complications arising from traditional circumcision as well as the risk of communicable diseases.

“The point is not to promote medical circumcision over traditional circumcision, but rather to ensure that both methods are applied effectively and with the individual’s health and best interests at heart.

Our aim is to increase the number of men who are circumcised and thereby reduce the number of men at risk of sexually transmitted infections,” Mamkeli added.
