ANC to watch process of possible closure of 14 schools closely

The African National Congress in the Western Cape has welcomed the decision by the Provincial Department of Education to review the process of the closure of 14 schools.

The 14 schools last year appealed a Constitutional Court judgment regarding the closure of the schools and were not successful.

The WCED in a statement said it will look at the situation as a whole in the province and in the event that closure is recommended again, new notices will be published and representations may again be made.

ANC’s Cobus Grobler said inequality needs to now be addressed. The fact that there are two Afrikaans schools in the same village, following the same curriculum, writing the same exams the one coloured and the other white is unacceptable; they should integrate those schools as well.

Grobler added that most of those white schools are not viable, they are too small, and they’ve got all the facilities while the coloured schools have none.
