South Africans Against Drunk Driving is in support of government’s proposal that will see liquor traders, manufacturers and distributors liable for any harm or damaged caused by people who have drunk too much.

The discussion document also states that traders should not serve liquor products to already intoxicated persons.

Caro Smit, founder of South Africans Against Drunk Driving said the thing that we exceptionally worried about is really the amount of people who become alcoholics because they start drinking at an early age, because the younger you start binge drinking the quicker you turn yourself into an alcoholic.

“If we can try and tell people, tell parents, pubs, the young people themselves about the damage of heavy drinking under the age of 21 but I am sure this will assist to tie and get good drinking age higher and bring down some of the harm,” Smit added.
