Violence in Blikkiesdorp condemned

The City of Cape has condemned the violence which erupted in Blikkiesdorp yesterday.

The residents are up in arms over the plans by Airports Company of South Africa to develop parts of the airport zone which would mean the community would have to be relocated.

The city said the proposal would affect some communities located in the airport safety zone.

Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements Benedicta van Minnen said the City of Cape Town is currently investigating what options are available for possible future relocation of Blikkiesdorp, as a result of the agreement with ACSA.

Van Minnen said this is a complicated process that would involve a land swap as well as rezoning and will take several years to conclude.

“The City of Cape Town will be consulting with the people of Blikkiesdorp about future moves, and at this point any action is premature and it is simply fueled by the narrow agendas of a few” Van Minnen added.
