An accident this morning left 20 people injured after a bus collision on the R74 outside of Harrismith in the Free State.

It is believed that the driver of the bus lost control of his vehicle after one of the tires apparently burst.

ER24 Spokesperson Russel Meiring said they arrived on scene and found a mass casualty scene. On inspection, paramedics discovered that roughly 20 people had sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical.

He added that an incident commander took control of the scene, which delegated the patients to the various services on scene. All the patients were found lying on the side of the road.

“Paramedics began their treatment of the patients while providing the critically injured patients with advanced life support. Once treated, all the patients were transported to various hospital including Mediclinic Hoogland for further treatment.” Meiring said.

Exact details to the cause of the accident will remain the subject of a police investigation.
