Ten fatalities recorded on Western Cape roads over the weekend

Western Cape traffic authorities over the past weekend conducted 24 roadblocks across the province of which 2 994 vehicles were stopped and checked.

1 702 drivers were tested for alcohol and 26 drivers were arrested for drinking and driving.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said the highest reading recorded was the reading of 1, 4mg per 1000ml that was in Swellendam.

Africa said the total amount of fines issued was R 344 050 and we also tested a speed of 5957 of which we prosecuted 419 drivers for exceeding the speed limit.

Africa said the highest speed recorded in the Western Cape since Friday was a 179kmph in a 120 zone on the N1 near Brackenfell and 143kmph in a 100 zone in Vredenberg.

Meanwhile also during the roadblocks one person was arrested in Swellendam for reckless and negligent driving, another one for being in possession of false documentation and one for exceeding the speed limit. 

Africa said one person was arrested in Brackenfell for being in possession of dagga and another person was arrested in Worcester for being in possession of false documentation.

Africa said ten fatalities were recorderd on the province’s roads this past weekend.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said one person died in Atlantis in a motor vehicle accident another in Lady Smith.

In the Southern Cape one pedestrian was killed and knocked over by a vehicle.

“In Caledon one pedestrian died and in Stellenbosch on Saturday a train and light motor vehicle collided killing the occupants in the vehicle” Africa added.
