26 drivers arrested for drunken driving in roadblocks in the WC

Western Cape Traffic Authorities conducted 24 roadblocks across the province this past weekend whereby 3 853 vehicles were stopped and checked. 

2 147 drivers were tested for alcohol and 26 were arrested for drunken driving. The highest reading was six times over the legal limit recorded at 1,39 mg/1 000 ml.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said the speed of 16 433 vehicles were tested of which 1 445 drivers were prosecuted for exceeding the speed limit.  The total amount of fines issued was R684 350 and the highest speed recorded in the province was in Brackenfell.

Also during the roadblocks ten people were arrested.

Five taxis were impounded, four drivers arrested for being in possession of false documentation, and one person was arrested for being in possession of 200 units of mandrax tablets with a street value of R10 000 and seven grams of tik with a street value of R1 400 in the Grabouw area.

Africa said three fatalities were recorded over this past weekend.  One person died in a motor vehicle accident, a pedestrian died after being knocked down in Parow and then late Saturday afternoon a driver of a motor vehicle lost control on the N2 and died on the scene.
