The African National Congress in the Western Cape has raised its concerns regarding the increase in shack fires in the province.

A statement released by the City of Cape Town revealed that over the 2014 festive season there were 7 949 fire incidents, 694 structural fires and 20 fatalities.

ANC Provincial Housing Spokesperson Khaya Magaxa said these figures are an indication of the housing crisis in the province. In winter our people experience very bad flooding and in summer they experience veld fires that are costing lives.

Magaxa said the DA-led provincial government has been failing dismally to prepare for such occurrences.

“The provincial government needs to urgently deal with the housing problem in the province which is resulting in people loosing their lives” Magaxa added.
