The Democratic Alliance has called for the conduct of
Minister of Police Nkosinathi Nhleko to be reviewed in Parliament.
According to the DA this follows the Minister acting
outside of his authority in suspending the Head of the Hawks.
DA MP of Police Dianne Kohler Barnard said it is this
kind of political interference that undermines the fight against priority
crime.
She said that the DA believes that Minister Nhleko has
acted beyond the scope of his authority because he does not have the legal
power to effect a suspension or dismissal of the Head of the Hawks, but must do
so only if recommended as such by Parliament. Suspension of Anwar Dramat was
never considered by Parliament, so he acted rogue and without authority.
“It would appear that Minister Nhleko has
deliberately circumvented Parliament in order to carry out a purge of those
officials in the Hawks who act independently and without fear or favour” Barnard
added.
