DA: Progress being made in discussions regarding blood alcohol samples backlog

The Democratic Alliance said following a meeting with Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi regarding the backlog of blood alcohol samples, progress has been made.

At a meeting with the DA last week Minister Motsoaledi agreed on several issues including funding for additional staff to meet the norm of having one laboratory assistant per chemical analyst and also the recognition that the backlog of 69 476 unprocessed blood samples is a massive problem.

DA MP of Health Wilmot James said one point I will continue pressing the minister on is the fact that we must make use of our chemical pathology labs at our universities in order to clear the backlog.

James said universities have to become part of the solution and to do that the minister has to make regulatory changes in order for that to be possible.

“So I will continue to press him on this issue so that we can solve this once and for all” James added.
