Metal Industry sits with two agreements but no actual solution

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa has agreed to the National Employers Association of South Africa’s demand to end the lock-out.

Nease enforced the lock-out last year after a deal to end a strike fell through.

In July last year Numsa agreed to demands set by Nease which included a 7% across the board wage increase and a 50% reduction of the entry level wage for new employees.

Neasa CEO Gehard Papenfus said the industry now sits with two agreements. The one signed by Seifsa which the Minister of Labour Mildred Oliphant has extended to all parties including Nease. Then a capitulation agreement between Nease and Numsa on better conditions for employees.

Papenfus added by saying that is the dilemma and he foresees interesting times.
