The Democratic Alliance has called for the better use of the Asset Forfeiture Unit to fight gang-related crime.

This follows a reply to a DA parliamentary question which revealed that the Western Cape had low conviction rates for gang-related murders and attempted murders over the last three years.

DA Provincial Spokesperson on Community Safety Mireille Wenger has written to the National Prosecuting Authority in the province to raise her concerns regarding the low conviction rate.

Wenger says ‘’between 2011 and 2013 there were 950 reported gang related murders in our province, in that same time frame, the criminal justice system only managed to convict 35 cases successfully, which is a 4% conviction rate

“Similarly for gang-related attempted murders there were 2207 gang-related attempted murders in our province, in the same period of time, 50 cases were successfully prosecuted which compare the number of cases generated in the time is equivalent to a 2%conviction rate” Wenger added.
