Western Cape MEC of Education
Debbie Schafer on Tuesday said over the past few years the department has
invested heavily in areas such as Khayelitsha and there has been an increase in
matric pass rate in 2014.
MEC Schafer said education can
be improved in the area but the progress made in a short period of time must be
congratulated.
The province received a pass
rate of 88.4 percent and the fourth highest pass rate in the country.
Ministerial Spokesperson
Jessica Shelver said we believe that retaining more learners in the system and
giving them the opportunity to pass is more important than losing learners
along the way so that schools can achieve a higher pass rate.
Shelver said in light of this
we are also especially proud that the Western Cape has again achieved the
highest percentage of bachelor's passes in the country, with 38.8% of learners
achieving this quality pass.
“The province improved its
mathematics pass rate from 73.3% to 73.9%. The pass rate in physical sciences
decreased by 1.9% to 70.7% Shelver added.
